Black smoke often indicates excess fuel or insufficient air; white smoke can involve unburned fuel, coolant, or low combustion temperature; blue smoke commonly points to oil entering combustion. Smoke color is useful evidence, but testing is required before determining the repair.

Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can cause major engine damage. Turn off the AC, pull over safely, shut the engine down if the temperature remains high, and arrange an inspection or tow.
Watch for delayed engagement, slipping, harsh or erratic shifts, unusual noises, fluid leaks, a burning odor, or a transmission warning light. These symptoms don’t automatically mean the transmission needs replacement; proper testing is needed to distinguish between a fluid, electrical, hydraulic, or internal mechanical issue.
Start by checking your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended transmission service interval and determining when the transmission was last serviced. Service intervals vary considerably by vehicle and transmission type. Arizona’s extreme heat can also place additional stress on transmission fluid, making fluid condition especially important for Valley drivers.
Here in the Valley of the Sun, temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees. That heat places additional stress on transmission fluid, so we recommend treating Arizona vehicles as severe-duty vehicles. Worn fluid loses its ability to lubricate, cool, clean, and protect internal components properly.
Fresh, manufacturer-specified fluid restores the detergents, friction modifiers, viscosity, and protective additives the transmission needs. However, fluid service will not repair an existing mechanical or electrical failure. If the vehicle is slipping, shifting hard, hesitating, leaking, or displaying a warning light, it needs a complete diagnosis before repairs are recommended.
Possible causes include poor condenser airflow, a cooling-fan problem, refrigerant charge concerns, compressor performance, or high system pressure. Arizona heat makes correct airflow and system charge especially important.
Low refrigerant from a leak, compressor or control failure, electrical trouble, airflow restriction, blend-door problems, or excessive engine temperature may reduce cooling. Checking pressures, temperatures, controls, and leak evidence prevents guesswork.
Automotive AC refrigerant is not normally consumed. If the charge is low, a leak is likely, although system performance can also be affected by airflow, electrical, sensor, or mechanical problems.
Cost varies widely between a minor electrical or sealing issue and major compressor or evaporator work. Accurate pressure, temperature, leak, and control-system testing is needed before a dependable estimate can be given.
Low coolant, coolant leaks, a failed cooling fan, a sticking thermostat, a restricted radiator, a failing water pump, a faulty pressure cap—also known as the radiator cap—poor airflow, or an internal engine problem may cause overheating. If the temperature begins to rise, turn off the A/C and turn the heater and fan on high to help remove heat from the engine temporarily. Find a safe place to stop as soon as possible if the temperature continues rising. Never open the radiator cap or cooling system while the engine is hot.
Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s fluid specification and interval while accounting for age, mileage, fluid condition, and severe Arizona heat. Mixing incompatible coolant types can reduce protection, so the correct product matters.
