Signs Your Transmission Needs Attention

Schedule a transmission inspection or diagnostic service if you notice:

  • Transmission slipping
  • Delayed engagement when shifting into Drive or Reverse
  • Hard, harsh, or erratic shifting
  • Transmission won’t shift into certain gears
  • Vehicle hesitates or struggles to accelerate
  • Shuddering or vibration while driving
  • Grinding, whining, humming, or unusual noises
  • Transmission fluid leaking
  • Burning smell
  • Check Engine or transmission warning light
  • Vehicle goes into reduced-power or limp mode
  • RPM increases without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed

Transmission problems often become more expensive when ignored. Having the problem diagnosed early may help prevent additional damage.

Complete Transmission Services

Whether you drive a vehicle with an automatic, manual, CVT, or electronically controlled transmission, proper diagnosis is the first step.

Don’t Replace a Transmission Until You Know What’s Wrong

A transmission that slips, shifts hard, hesitates, or won’t move properly doesn’t automatically mean you need a new transmission.

Modern vehicles rely on sophisticated electronics, sensors, solenoids, computers, wiring, hydraulic systems, and mechanical components to control transmission operation.

That’s why American Five Star diagnoses first.

Our technicians in Tempe, AZ work to identify the actual cause of the problem before recommending a major repair, rebuild, or replacement.

Transmission Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis is critical before making an expensive transmission repair decision.

Our technicians use professional diagnostic equipment and testing procedures to evaluate electronic controls, trouble codes, fluid condition, hydraulic operation, transmission performance, and related vehicle systems to help pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Our goal isn’t to sell you the most expensive option. It’s to help you choose the repair that makes the most sense for your vehicle.

Transmission Maintenance & Fluid Service

Transmission fluid performs several critical jobs. It lubricates internal components, controls heat, provides hydraulic pressure, and helps the transmission operate and shift properly.

Transmission fluid condition and service requirements vary widely by manufacturer and transmission design.

We service transmissions according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, using the proper fluid and service procedures for the application.

Automatic, Manual & CVT Transmission Service

Today’s vehicles use many different transmission designs, and they don’t all require the same fluids, diagnostic procedures, or repair methods.

Proper identification of the transmission and the correct service procedure is essential before maintenance or repairs are performed.

American Five Star services a wide range of:

  • Automatic transmissions
  • Manual transmissions
  • Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT)
  • Electronically controlled transmissions
  • Front-wheel-drive transaxles
  • Rear-wheel-drive transmissions
  • Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications
  • Light-duty truck transmissions
  • Diesel truck transmissions

Depending on what we find, your options may include:

  • Maintenance or fluid service

FAQs

How often should I service my transmission?2026-09-17T17:16:10-04:00

Here at American Five Star Auto Repair & Transmission in Tempe, we generally recommend servicing conventional automatic transmissions every 30,000 miles and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) every 25,000 miles. We consider your vehicle’s manufacturer requirements, driving conditions, and service history when making that recommendation.

Here in Arizona, heat puts extra demand on your transmission and can accelerate fluid breakdown. Fresh, correctly specified fluid helps lubricate internal components, control heat, and support smooth operation. Using the proper fluid is also essential for compatibility with your transmission’s internal seals.

Regular service is an investment in your vehicle’s future. As you work toward 120,000–140,000 miles and beyond, consistent maintenance can help reduce wear and the risk of expensive repairs.

As I like to say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Can a transmission warning light mean something other than transmission failure?2026-09-16T18:11:46-04:00

Yes. A warning may be triggered by a sensor, wiring problem, temperature issue, solenoid, low voltage, engine-related fault, or an internal transmission condition. The stored codes are clues—not a complete diagnosis.

Where can I find a trusted transmission repair shop near Tempe and ASU?2026-09-15T09:58:38-04:00

American Five Star Auto Repair & Transmission serves Tempe and the surrounding East Valley. We diagnose transmission concerns, explain the evidence, and review repair options before work is authorized.

Can you diagnose my transmission before recommending a replacement?2026-09-15T09:57:54-04:00

Yes. A professional diagnosis may include a road test, computer scan, fluid inspection, electrical testing, live-data review, and additional hydraulic or mechanical tests when appropriate. Replacement should not be the starting assumption.

How much does transmission repair cost in Tempe, Arizona?2026-09-15T09:56:49-04:00

Cost depends on the vehicle, failure, parts, labor, fluid specification, and whether the solution is an external repair, valve-body work, rebuild, or replacement. An accurate estimate requires diagnosis; a price given before testing may solve the wrong problem.

Why is my transmission fluid leaking?2026-09-14T17:43:51-04:00

Common leak points include cooler lines, seals, gaskets, the transmission pan, and electrical connectors. Because low fluid can cause overheating and loss of hydraulic pressure, check the leak source and fluid level promptly.

Why is my transmission slipping when I accelerate?2026-09-13T10:32:26-04:00

Slipping can result from low or deteriorated fluid, incorrect hydraulic pressure, a sticking solenoid or valve, worn clutch material, or an electronic control problem. Limit unnecessary driving and have the vehicle diagnosed, because continued slipping can create additional heat and damage.

What are the first signs of a failing transmission?2026-09-13T10:32:39-04:00

Watch for delayed engagement, slipping, harsh or erratic shifts, unusual noises, fluid leaks, a burning odor, or a transmission warning light. These symptoms don’t automatically mean the transmission needs replacement; proper testing is needed to distinguish between a fluid, electrical, hydraulic, or internal mechanical issue.

How do I know whether my transmission needs service or repair?2026-09-15T09:52:34-04:00

Start by checking your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended transmission service interval and determining when the transmission was last serviced. Service intervals vary considerably by vehicle and transmission type. Arizona’s extreme heat can also place additional stress on transmission fluid, making fluid condition especially important for Valley drivers.

Here in the Valley of the Sun, temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees. That heat places additional stress on transmission fluid, so we recommend treating Arizona vehicles as severe-duty vehicles. Worn fluid loses its ability to lubricate, cool, clean, and protect internal components properly.

Fresh, manufacturer-specified fluid restores the detergents, friction modifiers, viscosity, and protective additives the transmission needs. However, fluid service will not repair an existing mechanical or electrical failure. If the vehicle is slipping, shifting hard, hesitating, leaking, or displaying a warning light, it needs a complete diagnosis before repairs are recommended.
