AC Repair & Air Conditioning Service in Tempe, AZ

AC Repair & Air Conditioning Service

When Arizona temperatures climb, a properly working car AC isn’t just a luxury—it’s essential. If your air conditioning is blowing warm, taking too long to cool down, making unusual noises, or simply isn’t keeping up with the heat, American Five Star Auto Repair & Transmission can help keep you safe on the road.

Signs Your Vehicle’s AC Needs Attention

Have your AC system inspected if you notice:

  • Warm or hot air coming from the vents
  • AC isn’t as cold as it used to be
  • System takes too long to cool the vehicle
  • AC works while driving but gets warm at idle
  • Cooling comes and goes
  • Weak airflow from the vents
  • Unusual noises when the AC is operating
  • Unusual odors from the vents
  • Water leaking inside the vehicle
  • Compressor repeatedly cycling on and off
  • AC or climate-control warning messages

In Arizona, a marginal AC system can quickly become noticeable once outside temperatures reach their summer extremes.

Our ASE-certified technicians provide complete automotive AC diagnostics, service, and repair for today’s increasingly complex climate-control systems.

Don’t Just Add Refrigerant: Find Out Why It’s Low

If your AC isn’t cold, adding refrigerant isn’t always the answer. An AC system that is low on refrigerant may have a leak. Poor cooling can also be caused by a compressor problem, electrical failure, a pressure sensor issue, a cooling fan problem, an expansion valve issue, a condenser issue, an evaporator issue, a blend-door problem, or another system fault.

At American Five Star, we diagnose the problem before recommending the repair.
Our technicians test the system to determine what’s preventing it from cooling properly so you can make an informed repair decision.

We inspect and test your vehicle’s air conditioning system to determine why it isn’t cooling properly. Depending on the problem, diagnosis may include checking system pressures, vent temperature, refrigerant charge, compressor operation, electrical controls, cooling fans, sensors, airflow, and climate-control operation.

The correct refrigerant type and charge are critical to proper A/C operation.

American Five Star services vehicles using common automotive refrigerants, including R-134a and R-1234yf, in accordance with vehicle and A/C system requirements. We use the correct service procedures rather than simply adding refrigerant and hoping the problem goes away.

Refrigerant doesn’t normally disappear from a properly sealed system. If the system is low, we’ll work to determine where the refrigerant is going. Leaks may occur at hoses, seals, fittings, condensers, evaporators, compressors, service ports, or other A/C components. Finding the source of the leak is an important part of repairing the system correctly.

The compressor is a major component of your vehicle’s air conditioning system, but a compressor that isn’t operating doesn’t automatically mean the compressor itself has failed. Electrical problems, sensors, pressure conditions, control modules, wiring, or other system faults can prevent the compressor from operating. That’s why proper diagnosis comes before replacement.

The condenser releases heat from the refrigerant while the evaporator removes heat and moisture from the air entering the passenger compartment. Damage, leaks, restrictions, or airflow problems involving either component can significantly reduce cooling performance. Our technicians can evaluate these components as part of a complete A/C diagnosis.

Electrical & Climate-Control Diagnostics

Modern automotive AC systems are increasingly computer-controlled. Professional diagnostic equipment allows us to evaluate these systems instead of guessing which component is causing the problem.

Depending on the vehicle, the climate-control system may rely on:

  • Temperature sensors
  • Pressure sensors

  • Control modules

  • Electronic actuators

  • Blend doors
  • Blower motors and controls

  • Relays and wiring

  • Cooling fans

  • Computer-controlled compressors

Cabin Airflow & Cabin Filter Service

Sometimes the AC system produces cold air but doesn’t move enough of it into the passenger compartment. A restricted cabin air filter, blower motor issue, airflow door problem, or other ventilation issue can reduce AC performance.

We inspect the system to determine whether the concern is refrigeration, airflow, electrical—or a combination of problems.

AC Performance Testing for Arizona Conditions

An AC system that seems acceptable on a mild morning may struggle badly during a 110-degree Arizona afternoon. We evaluate your system’s cooling performance, vent temperatures, operating pressures, and related components to determine whether it is performing as it should.

Our goal isn’t simply to make the air coming from the vents feel cooler in the shop. We want your AC prepared for Arizona.

Don’t Wait Until the First 110° Day

Diagnose it first. Fix it right. Stay cool.

FAQs

Why does my car AC take so long to get cold in Arizona?2026-09-13T10:53:58-04:00
A car AC system may take too long to cool because of low refrigerant, a restricted cabin air filter, poor condenser airflow, compressor performance problems, or the extreme heat inside a vehicle parked in the Arizona sun. Testing vent temperature, refrigerant pressures and system operation can determine whether the AC is working normally or needs repair.
Why does my AC work while driving but stop cooling at idle?2026-09-13T10:29:40-04:00

Possible causes include poor condenser airflow, a cooling-fan problem, refrigerant charge concerns, compressor performance, or high system pressure. Arizona heat makes correct airflow and system charge especially important.

Why would my car’s air conditioner get cold then start blowing warm air?2026-09-13T10:29:04-04:00

Low refrigerant from a leak, compressor or control failure, electrical trouble, airflow restriction, blend-door problems, or excessive engine temperature may reduce cooling. Checking pressures, temperatures, controls, and leak evidence prevents guesswork.

How much does car AC repair cost in Tempe?2026-09-13T10:26:10-04:00

Cost varies widely between a minor electrical or sealing issue and major compressor or evaporator work. Accurate pressure, temperature, leak, and control-system testing is needed before a dependable estimate can be given.

Why is my vehicle overheating in Arizona heat?2026-09-13T10:22:02-04:00

Low coolant, coolant leaks, a failed cooling fan, a sticking thermostat, a restricted radiator, a failing water pump, a faulty pressure cap—also known as the radiator cap—poor airflow, or an internal engine problem may cause overheating. If the temperature begins to rise, turn off the A/C and turn the heater and fan on high to help remove heat from the engine temporarily. Find a safe place to stop as soon as possible if the temperature continues rising. Never open the radiator cap or cooling system while the engine is hot.
